Freebirds Rally Late to Even Series Against Coast
The Long Beach Coast faced the Yuba-Sutter Freebirds in game two of a three-game series. After the Coast secured the first win in franchise history with a 10-6 victory yesterday, the Freebirds responded with an 8-5 win to even the series.
Nathan Hemmerling got the start for the Coast and dominated on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings while recording seven strikeouts and allowing only three hits. In the bottom of the first inning, Hemmerling struck out the side and continued to control the game throughout his outing.
The Coast broke their scoreless drought in the top of the seventh inning. With a runner on second, Anthony Mata delivered an RBI single, giving the Coast a 1-0 lead. The Freebirds answered quickly with a two-run home run followed by a solo shot to take a 3-1 lead.
Emilio Corona has been a standout in the series after hitting two home runs yesterday, and he kept the hot streak alive today with a two-RBI single to deep center field that tied the game. With runners in scoring position, Paul Winland Jr. reached on an error, bringing in two unearned runs. Giving the Coast a 5-3 lead.
The Freebirds quickly responded, rallying for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take control of the game and secure the 8-5 victory.
With the series now split, the two teams will meet tomorrow in the rubber match.
